Abstract

The revision of the TAT in the Test Revision Project started with the purpose of adapting it and making it applicable to the Chinese culture. A new set of TAT cards as drawn by a Chinese artist, according to the criteria for designing such a series, substituted for the original TAT. Two preliminary tests were performed to determine a final set of TAT picture cards. The first employed 83 university students as subjects in groups. The stimulus value of each picture was analyzed and the pictures modified and redrafted, until a series of satisfactory pictures evolved for use. The secondary preliminary test secures the individual responses to the TAT cards for 20 subjects. These responses were analyzed into four categories of need; achievement, affiliation, power and aggression. A measure of ambiguity was applied to each card, and modification were made until the final set of TAT cards was obtained for Chinese use.

This new set of TAT cards were administered to 120 university subjects and 20 schizophrenic patients equally divided in terms of sex and educational level. Their protocols were analyzed in terms of needs for achievement, affiliation, power and aggression. The intrascore reliability, for 20 subjects, was found to be 0.93, 0.82, 0.86 and 0.95 respectively.
