Effects of Word Concreteness and Presentation Rate on Forward and Backward Paired-Associate Recall

Abstract

Effects of noun concreteness and presentation rate on paired-associate recall were assessed in the usual study-recall procedure. Recall direction was either forward or backward. Ninety-six subjects attempted recall in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design, with recall direction as a within­-Ss variable, and with concreteness and presentation rate as between-Ss variables. The results showed that, while the concrete nouns were better recalled than the abstract nouns, there were no significant dif­ferences between the forward and backward direction in either level of the concreteness. This result does not support the Paivio associa­tive directionality hypothesis. The results also showed that the recall difference between the concrete and abstract nouns decreased as the rate of presentation decreased. 


字的具體性與呈視速率在配對學習中對前向與後向囘憶的影響

摘要

本實驗在練習一囘憶的程序中評價字的具體性與呈現率對配對學習的影響,並藉兩者的文交互作用探討利用心像幫助記憶的基本機構。囘憶的方式分前向與後向兩種。九十六個受試在— 2 X 2 X 2 的因子設計中從事配對的學習,以囘憶方向爲受試者內變項,以具體性與呈現率爲受試者間變項。實 驗的結果發現;雖然具體的字在囘憶上優於抽象的字,但前向與後向的囘億並不因不同的具體程度而有不同的差異,此結果並不支持Paivio的聯結方向性的理論。實驗結果同時發視:具體性與呈現率對囘億有顯著的交互作用;當呈現率較快時,具體性的作用也較大,反之亦然。此結果說明,在配對學當中,以心像爲居間物比以語意為居間物較簡單而容易,因此也得到較多的複誦機會。
