Abstract

A previous study of the author disclosed a pattern of motion control variability for repeated motor tasks. The intra-task progressive motion variability (PMV) for repetitive tasks was found to increase progressively as a function of task duration,· culminating to a peak moments before the task termination.
The purpose of this study was to examine the pheIWmenon of PMV in normal subjects and the athetoid subjects. The task was the drawing of 20 oneinch straight lines. The equipment used included a PDP-8 computer and a hand motion pressure transducer. Task performance was analyzed by 4 indices: task time, task pressure, and magnitude and location of peak motion variability. The intra-task PMV was confirmed in both the normal and the athetoidic subjects. Except for the location of the peak motion variability, significant differences were found for other three task measures between the two groups. The results are significant in having established the pattern of fine motor control behaviour of the athetoidic subjects.
