Abstract

The Chinese version of the General Health Questionnaire--30 was administered to 109 mental patients, along with several other scales measuring somatic and psychological symptoms. While the GHQ was found to have high internal consistency as a scale and high item-total correlation for most of the items, the data revealed that GHQ scores correlated significantly with all other measures of psychological well-being. Factor analysis with a six-factor solution showed that six factors were abstracted from the scale, nalely, Abxiety, Incompetence, Depression, Anhedonia, Avoidance and Indecisiveness. While most of these sub-scales were reliable, corretations between the various sub-scale scores and other indices of psychological well-being were also found to be mostly significant. These findings generally suggest that the Chinese GHQ-30 possesses acceptable psychometric properties and it could be used as an objective instrument assessing 'general' psychological health in the clinical setting.
