Abstract

The attitudes of 1850 Chinese secondary school students to ex-mental patients and their mental health knowledge were investigated. With special focus on their behavioral intentions toward ex-mental patients, it was found that the subjects were generally willing to relate to ex-mental patients under different social contexts, except in those situations which would make a person easily affected by the behavior of ex-mental patients. The data further showed that the subjects' behavioral tendencies scores correlated significantly with their occupational trust scores and their perceptions of the occupational performance of ex-mental patients, indicating a consistency between the cognitive and conative aspects of attitude to ex-mental patients. The implications of the data on the rehabilitation of ex-mental patients and the implementation of mental health education programs under the Chinese context are discussed.
